How to Set the Perfect Water Level in Your Bong
Set the perfect water level for your bong
When it comes to getting the smoothest, cleanest hit possible, your water level makes all the difference. Too little, and you’ll feel harsh, dry smoke. Too much, and you’ll get water splashing into your mouth — not ideal. The sweet spot is easy to find once you know what to look for.
Why does bong water level matter?
Your bong’s water acts as a natural filter and cooler. As smoke passes through the water, it removes ash and fine particles while dropping the temperature before it hits your lungs. The right amount of water ensures maximum filtration without restricting airflow, and makes sure you can enjoy your smoke to the fullest.
How to Set the Main Bong Water Level
- Remove the bowl head
- Start with your bong empty. Make sure the downstem is seated properly in the joint before adding water.
- Add water slowly through the mouthpiece.
Pour until the diffusion slits/holes on the bottom of the downstem are about ½ to 1 inch underwater. (the furthest underwater your downstem can get while not causing backsplash provides the best filtering)
This ensures that the air bubbles travel through water but still allow for smooth, unrestricted pull. - Test the pull (without lighting up).
Inhale through the mouthpiece — you should hear a consistent bubbling sound, but you should not have any water come up the mouthpiece. - If it feels tight, hard to draw, or you get water in your mouther, remove a little water.
- If you don’t hear much bubbling, add a bit more until you do.
- Check for splashback (water getting into your mouth)
Tilt your bong slightly or take a quick test pull like you would normally when smoking. If water splashes into the neck or mouthpiece, pour out a little — especially in smaller or angled bongs.
*Pro Tip - If you use ice cubes in your ice catch, leave the water level slightly lower as the level will rise as the ice cube melts into your main chamber.

Setting Water Level for Percolator Bongs
Each percolator chamber should have enough water to just cover its slits or holes, and still have level in main chamber at optimum level. Overfilling can restrict airflow between levels and cause splashback.
- Pour water slowly through main mouthpiece until level in main chamber of bong is slightly lower than optimum. (level will likely be high in percolator)
- Blow into the mouthpiece very gently until you hear light bubbling. This will set the level of your percolator just above slits in percolator which is proper level.
- Recheck level in main chamber as if you were setting standard bong.
- If level is too add more water and repeat steps 2-3.

Setting Water Level for Recycler Bongs
Fill until the main chamber just covers the intake holes. Take a gentle pull (without bowl) and water level will circulate through recycler system. Then reset water level again for just above main chamber percolator. When doing a test pull make sure that the water circulates through recycler system. (see pictures below)

Setting Water Level for Mini or Travel Bongs
Use less water — usually just enough to submerge the end of the downstem or percolator. Mini bongs have the challenge of getting water splashback in your mouth if water level is too high.
Pro tip: Because of the design of mini bongs, they should be hit more slowly and smoothly than a normal bong. No matter how good your water level is set, if you try to hit them like a large bong you will get splashback. So remember to be gentle and smoooooth.

Pro Tip: Use Clean, COLD Water To Fill Your Bong
Fresh water makes every hit taste better. Change it daily if you’re a frequent user. Cold water helps cool smoke more effectively. If you want the smoothest hit possible add ice cold water right before your session, or add ice cubes to bongs equipped with ice catchers for an extra-chilled experience.
Bonus: How To Keep Your Bong As Clean As Possible
Resin buildup and dirty water ruin flavor fast, and sometimes you don't want to have to change your water before every session. To help prevent resin buildup on your piece try a product like PIECE WATER or REZ-BLOCKER to keep your bong as clean as possible.
Final Thoughts
Setting the right water level in your bong is one of the easiest ways to improve flavor, smoothness, and airflow. Once you find the sweet spot for your piece, remember it. Every bong is a little different, but the principle stays the same: just enough water to get proper filtration, but not so much you get bong water splashback in your mouth. Smoke on my friends...
